As local high school seniors start finalizing college plans for the fall, here’s a scholarship for the budding mathemeticians, engineers, and scientists among them: the 2014 A.H. Kits van Heyningen Technology Scholarship, for $1,000.
Applications are now available for download from KVH, and have also been sent to the guidance offices of area high schools. The deadline for applying is May 5, 2014.
The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving local high school senior who will be attending a 4-year undergraduate science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) program in the fall. To be considered for the $1,000 scholarship, students must meet the requirements outlined in the application and must submit completed applications to KVH by May 5, 2014.
KVH started the scholarship in 2008 in recognition of the importance that engineers play in the current and future success of the company, which is a leading source for mobile satellite TV and broadband communication systems, along with defense and commercial guidance and stabilization solutions. The scholarship is named for Mr. A.H. Kits van Heyningen, KVH’s late co-founder and chief scientist.
Among those eligible for the scholarship are students who live on Aquidneck Island or attend high school on Aquidneck Island as well as the children and grandchildren of all current KVH employees. While this scholarship is not solely need based, preference will be given to students who demonstrate a financial need.
