With leading commercial fleets and leisure yacht owners relying on KVH’s mini-VSAT Broadband HTS network for access to applications that improve onboard communications, satellite link availability and throughput are critical. This can be a challenge when changes in link conditions, like the vessel’s distance to the center of the satellite beam, or rain, impact signal strength.
Satellite communications at sea traditionally relied upon “worst case” link capacity to ensure that there was sufficient throughput available at all times regardless of use. This led to significant inefficiencies with unused capacity on some links, and insufficient capacity on others. The result was a frustrating user experience for all users.
To provide maximum throughput even during changing link conditions, KVH uses a specialized technology that can automatically change the properties of a link to compensate for varying link conditions thereby optimizing link availability and throughput. Called Adaptive Coding and Modulation, or ACM, this technology ensures each vessel’s satellite link is optimized for that vessel’s conditions to maximize HTS network efficiency and deliver more consistent connections and a superior user experience.
